When, in 1943, Berlin was declared Jew-free, Weidt was forced to find places for his employees to go underground for the duration of the war. Not all were able to escape and Alice Licht, Weidt’s former secretary, was deported to Auschwitz. Weidt, although nearly blind himself, set off desperately to persuade the authorities to free Alice and her family. Despite the age difference, Weidt was in love with the young Jew and, posing as a travelling brush salesman, took the gamble of pursuing her to Auschwitz.

Karla Bauer sings "America the Beautiful" for Honor Flight Veterans
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RAISE MONEY TO SEND VETERANS ON HONOR FLIGHT
Twenty-Four Veterans on their way to Washington, D.C.
Twenty-one students from Southern Coffey County and three students from Western Plains High School are selected each year to be paired and serve as “guardians” for the twenty-four veterans getting ready to make the trip to Washington, D.C. Students must submit an essay as to why they want to make the trip, what they hope to gain from the trip, and how they can use that experience to their benefit. There is no cost to the veterans. All money for the trip was raised by the students, and through generous donations from local individuals and groups. The program began with the goal of helping World War II veterans visit the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. The program has since expanded to include Korean and Vietnam War veterans, with a special interest to send the aging and/or terminally ill.
